Cognitivism in Practice
This week I learned a lot about how advanced organizers can truly be successful tools in helping students to organize their thoughts. When completing the concept map for this week’s application I realized I was learning more about my trip then I thought possible. At the same time I was assessing my prior knowledge on the topic. This would be the same experience my students would have as they completed the concept map for our trip. Concept maps are an example of cognitive learning, as we are mapping or networking our ideas into a visual representation which Dr. Orey says is the use of sensory registers and improves learning by integrating multiple senses. This allows students to better remember the content and store it into long term memory with more than one way to recall the information. The same goes for note taking and summarizing, ques, and questions. All of these instructional stratifies that have embedded technology serve as tools to allow students to remember the most important topics and pieces of information on a topic and attach them to already stored information, therefore making more network connections. Cognitive learning theory stresses the importance of storing information into long-term memory and these instructional strategies all help to make the students active learners, creating numerous connections to stored information and fully comprehending and remembering what has been learned.

I find even with my high school students I have to provide them with an outline or list of the information I want them to have in their notebooks. I am still trying to find the connections my students need to put the information in long term memory. when I implement the concept mapping strategy I am hoping to create those connections.
ReplyDeleteI know... it seems like outlines or some kind of layout is a key component for allowing students to retain and make connections to the pertinent information we want them to learn. I think concept mapping is a great way for even high school students to map out content and make the connections you want them to. Good Luck!!
ReplyDeleteTeaching is a new career path so being in my second year I'm still expiermenting with every avenue from classroom management to teaching my students something useful. Hopefully something that they will maintain in long term memory. I also think the concept mapping is a great way for me and my students to map out future projects.
ReplyDeleteTerri, that’s an interesting idea, about mapping out future projects!! I never thought to use a concept map like that. I will have to think where I can incorporate that idea. Thanks for sharing.. Good Luck with the new Career! I have to say I am still new to the job too! I only taught three years, before I had my son and now am a stay at home mom. I miss teaching very much, but also feel strongly about wanting to raise my son. I hope to go back when he is in school full time himself, but in the meantime I love taking classes where I can still be learning from others who feel as passionately about teaching as I do.
