Connectivism and Social Learning in Practice
Social Constructivism is defined by Dr. Orey as occurring when students are engaged in constructing artifacts and conversing with others. The active conversation allows the students to concretize and understand the content. Cooperative or Collaborative learning is a prime example of social learning. What I feel is the greatest attribute of this type of learning is that the students are both creating an artifact and engaging with peers at the same time. Construtionism basis its theory on the idea that students learn best when building an external artifact or something they can share with others. Social Constructivism presumes it is best when hands on constructing is combined with the social interactions between peers. Together the idea of collaborative learning brings both of these ideas to the same learning experience. I have always use cooperative learning in my classroom, but after week four and five I can bring new meaning to the importance and effectiveness of this type of learning. As far as technology goes, it has only expanded the possibilities we have to allow students to work together to create meaningful, content rich, external artifacts, that can be not only great learning experiences for them but can be shared with the rest of the class as a way to further the learning experience.

I agree with you, I believe the tools we have learned about in this course, will definitely enhance our cirriculums. My question is, how do you maintaing a class of thirty students, last hour of the day who can not stop talking. Do you have a class like this, and if so, do you feel this type of learning practice enhances the lesson. Do you feel student will work harder in a group I guess is what I'm asking. I'm a second year teacher and trying to absorb all the difference ideas that I can.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of you where the technology we are learning can only increase the learning experiences of our students and it could be fun. It's just making sure the socialism is constructive within the class that poses the problem. As Terri mentions she has trouble with too much interactions that is not content based. i have the same problem, but with Remote Desktop, I hope to keep my students more focused on using the technology for the assignments or projects.
ReplyDeleteI think that collaborative learning is a great way to bring in the social learning theories. Socializing that is off task can be a problem and finding a solution means knowing your students well and being creative. My son was in a project that the teacher allowed students 5 minutes of socializing at the end of class, if all students were engaged on on task. They set daily goals and some groups who completed their goal early was allowed to have a few extra minutes of socializing. He told me that it really made their group focus to get done early, but often found that they worked as long as the rest of the class. Don't know if most students would be motivated for this, but it worked for my son. Just a thought...
